The Importance of Movement and Flexibility (2026/072)

Muscles don't mean anything if you can't use them! Never lose sight of your  mobility  when training... you can have strength, balance and coordination without bulging muscles which make movement difficult. Consider this professional act: Those twins have everything: strength, great flexibility for contortion, balance skills... and let's not overlook other slim but very fit guys who are developing their dance moves:   That's Ethan Samuel from Australia, who is becoming known world-wide through competing. So - today we recognise the importance of all movement - mobility in training, running, swimming, and many other sports... Even simple movements in training are important:   Wanna be a ninja? More random activities:  Go climb that mountain! Track and field...  Swim?   And, of course, gymnastics...   ...and, thinking about flying for a moment.. But back to dance: Tyre pulls and running combine mobility and strength/endurance training: ...and, of co...

Arm Balancing: A Combination of Core and Shoulder Strength and Patient Practice (2025/258)

Anyone can do this, but it takes a lot of work on your physical condition to be able to press through and hold the right shapes. Not every picture is an example of the perfect shape - you'll see the 'banana backs' compensating for poor shoulder flexibility. That, plus a 'stable' core musculature to ensure holding the shape, straight legs and (for gymnasts at least) stretched feet are the basic needs. And since your balance sensing organs are in your ears, having them close to the floor makes it harder than balancing the right way up. Do you remember how long it took you to figure out standing up? Admire the work that has gone into (most of) this. A good start with these lads... but needs work:   And to end today - how's this - for a 5yo?

It's Not Just Gym... (2025/153)

Fitness isn't just about lifting weights in the gym. It can be swimming, running, jumping, track and field... but whatever it is, it is the season for being outside. So most of today's fit guys are outside, and in some cases we can respect their fitness even though they're standing still - or even lying down! Let's go. As usual we let the young'uns feature near the end... and a final video of dance training: yes, flexibility and movement is all-important too... even though he breaks the 'outdoor' theme...
