KAΛΟΣΟΠΑΙΣ
KAΛΟΣΟΠΑΙΣ! Well now, thanks to reading the new book by Anthony Doerr, we've learned a new word. Unless you happen to be a Greek speaker, we'll keep you guessing, but think how the older generations (who enjoyed their youthful fitness) might praise the younger sportsmen, especially in those ancient times when 'gymnastics' really meant 'the naked art', including athletics, field sports like discus and so forth, and only men were permitted to watch.
Apparently the trophies offered to the successful young sportsmen were often clay pots which this word engraved on them.
There is a slightly 'seedy' aspect to the word which we need not dwell on here, lest the thought police catch up with us (and it's not our thing anyway). Suffice to say that, for the guys in today's exhibition of fitness progress and results on this blog, the description KAΛΟΣΟΠΑΙΣ is a perfect fit!
So do you agree? KAΛΟΣΟΠΑΙΣ indeed!
