Now we're moving on to the second of the 'big three' on which newbies to workouts tend to focus - the abdominals ('abs') aka "stomach".

I guess it's good to be ripped! Needs a lot of hard work - sit-ups every which way, leg raises from hanging and so forth. Plenty of examples here, starting with a great exercise video in which the final 'crunch' is the really good bit.

Let's just clear one thing up. The 'pattern' of your abdominal muscles is pretty much fixed at birth. For some guys, both sides are in line: in other's there is an offset. Also, if your birth pattern is a six-pack, no amount of working out will ever turn that into an eight-pack - it's all in the genes, I'm afraid!
